‘Emily’s work is beautiful and immediately eye-catching. But what makes her work stick in the mind is her skill in combining transgressive wit with a profound respect for her sources and the narratives they tell. I don’t know how she does it. It’s miraculous.’
Tom Morris, Artistic Director of Bristol Old Vic
An Audience with the Past is the biggest artistic installation within the Heritage Lottery-funded project to celebrate the past 250 years of the Bristol Old Vic.
The collage features characters from a wide selection of Bristol Old Vic productions, as well as images found whilst researching in the University of Bristol Theatre Collection, and the Bristol Archives. It covers the horseshoe walls of the auditorium’s Dress Circle, Upper Circle and Gallery.
The work also includes a vast collection of reproductions of playbills and posters, and is adorned with quotes researched from the archives; from show reports to reviews, to letters of complaint my own favourite being – ‘it was unfortunate that on Tuesday live fish were thrown upon the stage’
